The Jerusalem Cross is one large cross surrounded by four smaller ones. For centuries pilgrims carried it home from the Holy Land, and today it is the emblem of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, the friars who have cared for its holy sites since the fourteenth century. The five crosses are often read as Christ at the center with the four Evangelists around him, the Gospel going out to the four corners of the earth.
